Sole Source contract with Hanson Professional Services for continued work on the Kerr-McGee Rare Earths West Chicago Thorium Project. This project has now spanned two decades and cost more than 1.2 billion dollars. Current estimates suggest that while the scope decreases as decommissioning milestones are achieved, the groundwater cleanup and final free release of the site are not anticipated to be complete for another decade. Hanson Professional Services, Inc. (Hanson) was selected as the original engineering support contractor and has managed to provide highly qualified and competent subcontractors with expertise in geology, hydro-geology, and health physics for the decommissioning project. In order to maintain consistency, reliability, and institutional knowledge for this project it is imperative and in the best interest of the State of Illinois to maintain a contract with Hanson. Due to the complex geology and impacts on local groundwater, it is important that the engineering and oversight services being provided be carried out by a contractor, who is intimately familiar with site geology and groundwater models. Hanson was instrumental in development of the various reporting criteria and standards and objectives specific to this project. As the ground water program will require extensive corrective action review during the final stages of clean up, Hanson will be critical to ensuring successful completion.
